*SUMMARY: *The Machine Equipment Operator reports to the Superintendent of Roads and County Facilities and operates heavy trucks and a variety of construction equipment and maintenance equipment.
The Talbot County Roads Department responds to all aspects of programmed and routine maintenance, in all weather conditions, as well as emergency operations for approximately 370 miles of County-owned roads and right-of-way area,
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES* include the following:
• Exercises judgment for the safe operation of all types of automotive and truck equipment assigned.
• Maintains the appearance of equipment by removing road soils, cleaning windshields, washing and steaming equipment.
• Under the direction of Roads Department Shop Personnel, changes oil, greases, lubricates, services oil and air filters, changes tires, checks oil levels in engines and gear cases, checks coolant levels in radiators, and replaces fuses and lamps.
• May assist Roads Department Shop Personnel in the performance of more difficult maintenance functions.
• Assists with the Roads Department’s annual resurfacing program.
• Performs snow/ice removal, as necessary.
• May assist in the erection and maintenance of road signs.
• May flag traffic as necessary.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as sledges, hammers, wrenches, brooms, shovels, picks, hand tamps, chain saws, drills, sprayers, post hold diggers, etc.
, and maintains such equipment.
• Cleans buildings, shop areas and grounds, as needed.
• Performs other related duties as required.
*QUALIFICATIONS: *Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of high school equivalence and two years full–time experience or its equivalent in the operation of construction equipment and dump trucks (26,001 G.
V.
W or greater) and/or commercial road maintenance equipment.
At least one of these types of equipment must have included a vehicle equipped with a pedal-operated clutch and four-speed manual-selection transmission.
Applicant must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Ability to operate heavy trucks or appropriate construction and maintenance equipment (i.
e.
: backhoe, front-end loader, tractor mower, A-boom mower, wood chipper, tractor broom, tractor with ditching attachment, belt loader, pneumatic tire and steel wheeled rollers, asphalt paver, bucket truck, etc.
) to maintain County owned roads, bridges and right-of-way areas.
Knowledge of the traffic regulations of the State of Maryland for operation and commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
Knowledge of the safe operation of various types of automotive construction equipment.
Ability to maintain the appearance of an assigned piece of equipment and to perform minor maintenance functions such as: changing oil, lubricating, servicing oil and filters, changing tires, checking oil levels in engines and gear cases, replacing fuses and lamps, and other functions under the supervision of Roads Department Shop Personnel.
Routine maintenance of trucks, gasoline engines and diesel engines.
Ability to understand written and oral instructions, and to keep simple records of daily activities on time card.
Ability to perform other related roadway and bridge maintenance functions.

*WORK ENVIRONMENT: *The employee routinely works with and around heavy equipment such as heavy trucks, construction and maintenance equipment.

The noise level can be moderate to extremely loud.
