Position Description
This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-Time, Permanent, Represented, Traffic Signal Technician vacancy within the Highways Administration Division of the Department of Public Works.
This is skilled electronic work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic traffic control devices.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves installation, maintaining, and repairing solid state and electro-mechanical traffic control devices in accordance with standard trade practices.
Work is performed independently within established policies, procedures, and technical guidelines, and is reviewed by a superior through conferences and observation of the effectiveness of repairs and operations.

Installs, maintains, repairs, and modifies as necessary electro-mechanical and solid-state traffic control devices.
Operates and repairs electronic test equipment; performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on traffic control equipment.
Orders and maintains a parts and supplies inventory; studies manuals and literature to remain abreast of new equipment and procedures.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Performs related work as required.
POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS ARE REQUIRED TO LIFT, OR CAUSE TO BE LIFTED, TOOLS, MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT WEIGHING UP TO 1,500 POUNDS.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and repair of electro-mechanical and solid-state devices.
Considerable knowledge of electronic circuits used in timing and switching devices.
Ability to lift up to seventy-five pounds.
Ability to operate a forklift.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of work.
Skill in the use and care of the electronic equipment and testing devices used in the maintenance and repair of traffic signals.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superior, and contractors.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or vocational school supplemented by specialized training in electronic technology; two (2) of more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic, electro-mechanical, and solid state devices; and a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain the valid Class B commercial motor vehicle operator's license within six months of hire.
NOTE: The specialized training in electronic technology may be substituted with three (3) months of work experience in the maintenance and repair of traffic signals or a combination of experience and training.
NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
NOTE: This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
Supplemental Qualifications
Preferences will be given to applicants who possess the following:
1.
Two (2) or more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of traffic signals.
2.
Formal training in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signals.
3.
Experience in the operation and maintenance and computerized traffic signal systems, video detection, and pre-emption to include knowledge of traffic signal wiring and troubleshooting.
