Associate Chemist

_ The *Associate Chemist* will work closely with and support the principal investigator in the research and development of membranes for electrochemical devices.
The *Associate Chemist* will be performing hands on work in the formulation of liquid dispersions, solution casting of membranes from the liquid dispersions on both a research and pilot scale, and in the performance testing of these membranes.
The performance testing will include both mechanical and electrochemical testing.
The day-to-day activities include preparing polymer solutions, polymer film casting, solution casting of membranes, mechanical testing, properties testing, and electrochemical testing.
The candidate is expected to learn how to operate basic laboratory tools in the state-of-the-art chemistry-material science laboratories and in a prototype roll to roll membrane production.
Their role is also expected to maintain a safe environment by understanding of occupational, safety and health hazards, and comply with proper chemical waste disposal practices.
Location: Facility located in Harrington Delaware, relocating to Dover Delaware starting 2024.
*Key responsibilities:* * Formulation of polymer dispersions * Analysis of polymer dispersions such as viscosity and composition * Solution casting of thin polymer films to understand processing windows of the various created dispersions on both a sheet size and pilot equipment * Basic characterization and evaluation of membrane properties * Mechanical testing of thin membranes * Electrochemical performance testing of the generated membranes preferred * Record, summarize, and report test results to senior staff * Maintain equipment in proper working order and maintain a clean work area.
* Practice safe work procedures and comply with all EHS regulations.
*Qualifications and Experience:* * Associate or bachelor’s degree in science with 3-5 years experience is preferred, but 10+ years of relevant experience in membrane research or production without a degree will be considered.
* Previous experience in membrane manufacturing is a plus.
* Must have “safety-first attitude” and should effectively works in a team environment.
* Ability to understand and operate roll to roll equipment in laboratories.
* Able to strictly follow standard work instructions and standard operating procedures.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other relevant computer programs.
* Analytical and numerical skills: ability to perform mathematical calculations and generate basic workflow spreadsheets.
